How to start a coaching business

If you already tutor, supervise or mentor others in your field, you are most of the way to a coaching business. This guide covers the four things every coaching business needs, five steps to launch, and an honest look at building everything yourself versus licensing a framework.

The foundations

What a coaching business actually needs

A defined audience

“Coaching for everyone” is invisible. The coaches who fill their diaries serve a recognisable group with a recognisable problem, so the right people can find them and refer to them. Your own professional background is usually the strongest niche you have.

A structured offer, not ad-hoc advice

Buyers purchase outcomes, not hours. A named programme with a clear beginning, middle and end is easier to sell, easier to price and easier to deliver well than open-ended sessions. It also protects you: structure is what turns your experience into something repeatable.

A way to deliver it

Session plans, exercises, worksheets and a way for clients to work between sessions. This is the part most new coaches underestimate: designing good materials from scratch takes months, and it is the difference between a programme and a chat.

A route to clients

A simple website that explains who you help and how, a way for people to book a first conversation, and a follow-up process. You do not need a big audience; you need a frictionless path from “I heard about you” to “we are working together”.

The sequence

Five steps to launch

01

Choose who you serve

Start from the people you already understand. If you have spent years in a profession, you know its pressures, its language and its buying habits better than any outside coach ever will. That knowledge is your commercial advantage.

02

Turn what you know into a programme

Write down the journey you take people through: where they start, what changes, and in what order. If you cannot name the stages, you are selling time, not a result. A framework, yours or a licensed one, does this job for you.

03

Get a credential that means something

Coaching is unregulated, so buyers look for signals: a recognised methodology, a structured certification, and evidence you have delivered before. Choose training that leaves you with something to sell, not just a certificate.

04

Set up a simple way to sell

One page that says who you help and what changes, a booking link for a first call, and a short follow-up sequence. Resist building anything more until you have paying clients.

05

Launch with support, not alone

The first ninety days decide most coaching businesses. A launch plan, people to compare notes with, and somewhere to ask “is this normal?” will carry you further than any amount of extra preparation.

An honest choice

Build it yourself, or license a framework

Both routes work. They differ in time, cost and how much you have to invent before you can earn.

Build everything yourself

Full control and no licence fees, but you design the methodology, materials, website and sales process from nothing, typically many months of unpaid work before your first client, and no one checking your thinking.

License a proven framework

You pay a licence fee and work within someone else's methodology. In return you start with tested programmes, ready-made materials and a faster route to your first paying clients. The trade-off is less freedom over the content itself.

Where GROW fits

The Independent GROW Coach route

GROW is the licensed-framework option, built specifically for experienced health and wellness practitioners who want to coach others in their field.

The Licence-and-Launch Bundle is £1,995 (or 12 monthly payments of £185), and includes certification, your first year's licence, the coaching programmes and your personalised sales platform. From year two, the Ongoing Licence is £42 a month, ongoing licence, community and updates from year two, cancel any time.

You do not need to be a business coach already. The licence is designed for practitioners who already tutor, supervise or mentor: you bring the professional experience and the trust, GROW brings the methodology, the programmes, the materials and a launch-ready website with a booking funnel.
