Research

Building the evidence on practitioner business success

Clinical competence and career success are not the same thing. GROW coordinates independent-minded research into how health and wellness practitioners are prepared for professional life, and what happens after they qualify.

Why we research

Closing the gap between qualifying and thriving

Qualifying as a practitioner takes substantial clinical learning. Building a sustainable career brings further challenges: finding clients, managing finances and navigating self-employment.

Our research brings together three perspectives: training providers, practitioners themselves, and the mentors, tutors, supervisors and coaches who support them. Together they give a clearer picture of current practice and where support falls short.

The framework

Five stages of graduate support

The Graduate Success Benchmark examines the whole journey, from before enrolment to graduate follow-up.
  1. Stage 1

    Before enrolment

Realistic expectations about professional and financial life.

  2. Stage 2

    During training

Essential business knowledge and practical preparation.

  3. Stage 3

    At qualification

Support with the transition into practice.

  4. Stage 4

    After qualification

    Access to relevant business development.

  5. Stage 5

    Graduate follow-up

    Understanding graduates' experiences and outcomes.

These stages form an evidence-informed framework for examining graduate support. They are not presented as independently proven determinants of career success.

Research integrity

How we keep the research honest

  • Every study uses supplier-neutral questions.
  • Taking part doesn't require or imply endorsement of GROW products or services.
  • GROW also provides business education to practitioners and training organisations. We disclose this as a potential conflict of interest.
  • The studies are observational: they describe current practice and cannot prove that a particular support practice causes better outcomes.
  • Comparisons are only shown once enough responses exist to protect privacy.
